Today was the big day that I was able to get into the water cube. I woke up a bit late, since I stayed out with the Irish guys until morning.
I was woken up by my rather loud roommates again, who were making absolutely no effort to keep the noise down. Awesome. I spent a while trying to check my email, which was a nightmare. There were about 10 people queuing for the computers this morning, while one guy was just browsing news sites in Russian and another guy was having issues connecting to cosport, the official Olympics tickets site. Finally, I got out of there and headed on down to the green.
On the subway, they were broadcasting the women's AA finals. I ended up finishing watching the meet after getting off the subway on a big screen on the green. Seemed like a pretty exciting meet, from the bit that I saw. I can't believe those Chinese girls are 16! No possible way. After the meet ended, I headed over to the cube.
It was rather exciting finally going in. It's certainly a unique building on the outside, and the inside is no different. The pool and platforms are also nice, but as usual with these venues, I'm blown away by the amout of spectating space dedicated to media and VIPs, as well as the number of empty seats! I ended up moving way up to a better seat once it got closer to competition time.
The event was women's 3m diving preliminaries. Very cool stuff, although there were a total of about 10 unique dives performed out of 5 rounds of the 30 athletes. Also, I've found my next calling: judging diving. I was doing a little judging after each dive, and then seeing how my scores compared to the judges' ones. 9 times out of 10, I was spot on.
