Mutianyu Great Wall Tour (2009.8)

This was definitely the high point of my trip to China. I along with 14 other people took a tour bus arranged by one of our bosses. We went to the touristy part but that was ok, at least we got there. When we got there we walked up to what looks like a little street lined with vendors, it was funny people were grabbing us trying to sell us stuff.

There are two ways to get up to the wall from the parking area, either in a gondola or on a chairlift. It really reminded me of a ski resort, I felt like I should have had skis on when I got on the chair lift. Most of our group took the gondola, this way you start at a high point and walk mostly down hill, Brian, matt, and I took the chairlift which was mostly an uphill walk. Did I tell you all how hot and humid it is here, well that day was no exception.

There also is a toboggan ride by the chairlift that you can take back down to the parking area instead of the gondola or chairlift.

The wall itself was amazing, it looks like it goes on forever. It follows the ridge top of the mountain range. When I was on it I could not stop thinking of all the people who worked on it and how it was constructed. I gotta think the time it took to build that some people must have spent an entire lifetime working on it.

Some of the stones are so old and worn out, you can follow the footsteps on the stairs. The walkway on the wall is really interesting, some areas are flat, then there are gradual steps, these are about half the height of what we are used and some areas coming out of the house like buildings as twice as tall as what we are used too.

We walked from where the chairlift brought us up too the spot where the gondola brings people up and then back to the chairlift/toboggan. It was probably about a mile each way. This is definitely on of the Seven Wonders of the World.

When we got back to the chairlift end we did the toboggan ride that was really fun! After that we walked through the vendors and I bought a hat, shopping is soo much fun because you can barter. This is a great trip. I like to say The Great Wall is truly great.
